<The World until Yesterday> deals with the world that is governed by the law of causality. The law of casualty assumes that there are causes behind every existence. However, every cause has yet another cause of its own, causing an infinite chain of causes. In this sense, the law of casualty reveals the helplessness of existence, retracting to the origin of each existence.

Jang Pa’s previous work, <The End of the  World> depicted such sentiment of helplessness as an emotion felt in a world in the face of a catastrophic end without any coordinate. On the other hand, <The World until Yesterday> presents an attempt to overcome the very sense of helplessness, moving away from the world ruled by the law of casualty. Through the nonsense and absurd laugh caused by the application of the logic of the law of casualty without any reflection, the artist tries to find a way not to forget the fundamental meaninglessness of life.

It is to see the ultimate meaninglessness of life in a positive light by going around the issue of the helplessness of existence in the journey towards the endless discovery of one’s own causes and of the expected failures. Through this process, the artist moves between doubt and frustration, cynicism and amusement, groping for finding coordinates of the world that is different from the world of yesterday.

 어제까지의 세계

<어제까지의 세계 The World until Yesterday>는 인과율의 세계를 다룬다. 인과율은 존재하는 모든 것은 자기 자신을 넘어서는 원인이 있다고 전제한다. 그런데 모든 원인은 또 다른 원인을 가지고 있기 때문에, 결과적으로 우리에게 주어지는 것은 무한의 원인이다. 이렇게 자기 존재의 근거를 무한 소급하는 인과율은 존재의 무력함을 보여준다.

이러한 무력감이 이전 작업인 <세계의 끝 The End of the World>에서 좌표를 상실한 채 파국을 맞이하기 직전 세계의 정서로 그려졌었다면, <어제까지의 세계 The World until Yesterday>에서는 인과율적 세계에서 벗어나 무력감을 극복하고자 하는 시도를 보여준다. 인과론의 표면적 논리를 그대로 적용하여 유발되는 황당함과 실소를 통해 삶의 근원적 무의미를 망각하지 않는 법을 찾아 나서는 것이다.

자기 원인을 찾으려는 무한한 도전과 예견된 실패의 여정에서 존재의 무력함의 문제를 우회하여 삶의 근원적 무의미를 긍정하는 것. 이 과정을 통해 세계에 대한 회의와 좌절, 냉소와 유희 사이를 오가며 어제와 다른 세계의 좌표를 구하고자 한다.
